IMR: People: Zachary

Zachary
Aliases: Zac, Zacky, Z

Zachary is my son, and our second child. He was born at 9:23 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2002, considerably later than we expected. He weighed seven pounds, five ounces, and measured 19.5 inches long.

His Japanese middle name, Masaru, is my middle name, and in fact it has been given to sons on the Japanese side of my family for at least four generations. His Hawaiian middle name, Kauanoe, means "gentle rain," which complements his sister's name of Kilinahe (which is also a type of light rain) and my Hawaiian name of Kawailani ("heavenly waters"). Kauanoe also happens to be the name of the dormitory at the University of Hawaii at Hilo where Jen first lived after moving out here from Florida.

In October, at four months of age, Zac underwent cranial surgery to correct a birth defect. It was one of the toughest challenges I hope I ever have to face as a parent. He was home two weeks later, fortunately, and fully recovered. Today, apart from a still slightly lumpy head, he's exactly the kind of energetic, feisty rascal we always knew he'd become.

Vitals:

Born 3 June 2002. Younger brother to Katie, and older brother to Alex.
