I met Jaimee in Hilo in 1995. She ran with a large group of friends, mostly women, that included Jen.

As Jen is fond of reminding me, when I was first asked who among the lot I considered the most attractive, I picked Jaimee. Of course, this was back when Jen thought a balding man was hot, so who's embarrased?

Jaimee later transferred — reluctantly — to UH-Manoa, and ended up working with me at Ka Leo. I really didn't talk all that much to her, however, the job being so all-consuming.

[ Nate and Jaimee ]After a disasterous first matchmaking effort, Jen and I introduced her to Nate late one night at "The Groove," an alternative nightclub. The rest is history. The two of them couldn't have been more different, but that worked just fine for them.

They came along on a Spring Break trip to Moloka`i in 1996, memorable in part because Nate — feeling particuarly open-minded — agreed to help dispel Greg's nervousness over kissing a guy.

To everyone's dismay, Nate eventually followed his job with GST to Portland, Oregon. Jaimee originally planned to go with him, but changed her mind at the last minute — a move that upset many of their friends, myself included.

Still, we got over it. Jaimee and Nate, meanwhile, managed the LDR as best they could for over a year.

During the first half of 1997, with my seperation from Jen and a million other personal crises scrambling my brain, Jaimee and William became invaluable sources of companionship and support. We spent many a quiet afternoon watching animal documentaries on The Discovery Channel and going to the movies.

Then in a particularly colorful move, Jaimee abruptly left the islands to live with Nate in August. The two of them have been happily cohabitating ever since, sharing their apartment with two cats and attending Portland Community College at Sylvania.

Fortunately, she still visits home now and then, like in December 1998 and December 1999. I also had a chance to visit with them in October 2000.

While she decided quite emphatically to not visit her family in Honolulu for Christmas in 2001, I didn't mind — I was still giddy over the fact that she and Nate had officially and finally gotten engaged in November. They haven't yet set a wedding date, but we won't stop nagging them until they do.
