Grand opening of Hawaii's first Tropical Smoothie Cafe at Hawaiki Tower (88
Piikoi Street, 808-349-9526). Smoothies, sandwiches, wraps and salads. WiFi
too! Co-owner Timothy "Teddy" Wells plays Ivan the Other on ABC's "LOST."
One key innovation? A soundproof blending chamber. I didn't even notice the
peace and quiet (versus other smoothie joints) until Teddy mentioned it.

Live music in the KITV studios this morning, local band 8250. Mahealani
chatted them up before they played an original song with a very
"Sublime"-like sound. They'll be playing at Cheerleaders Sports Bar and
Grill in Salt Lake tomorrow night.

McHaupia

McDonald's of Hawaii seems to be experimenting with a "Haupia Pie" (haupia
being a creamy coconut dessert popular in the islands). I don't even like
coconut, but I had to try one. The sweet filling and the crispy, salty
crust is a nice combo. (But they ain't kidding with, "Caution: Filling Is
Hot!") The haupia is runnier than I'd expected -- most haupia is like
gelatin or thick pudding -- but still good. Definitely better than the
"Taro Pie" they tried last year.
