from the interisland terminal. Of course, they do call Las Vegas the "ninth

look at the "Singing Bridge," or "Airplane Bridge," where Highway 19 spans
the mouth of the Wailuku River. Built after a tsunami destroyed the
original crossing, its steel grate surface makes a signature buzz as you
drive on it. I remember listening for it as a kid, a sure sign we'd reached
Hilo. This was my first time across it as a pedestrian, though.

used to be Smokers' Central, complete with enormous, droning,
smoke-fighting fans. Now, just clean air and peace and quiet.

Nuuanu Avenue and turning it into what looks like London. They've also
