Details, Details

The Journalize process is still evolving. The list is new, its members are starting from scratch, and thus the way things work are very much subject to change as all the kinks are worked out.

Nonetheless, some basic guidelines follow, in no particular order. While we constantly stress that Journalize is an open, unmoderated, and only lightly managed list, following these suggestions will help things run more smoothly.

  • If you want to receive crits, you need to declare yourself. Anyone is invited to lurk on the list, or join only to contribute crits. But if you want people to review your site, you need to post a message saying so. This will add you to our "active list" (we'll start tracking your stats) and thus get you included in Journalize Review. Of course you need to include your URL. A brief introduction and some notes on what areas you're looking to improve would be especially helpful.

  • Professionalism and collegiality is key. Online journals are naturally very personal things. Critiques are naturally intimidating. Crit lists are invaluable resources, but often tread near sensitive areas, and thus extra care is needed to keep things constructive, if not entirely positive. Remember: we've come together only to help or be helped. While our ideas of good design may differ, we all share a passion for personal storytelling. The objective is to help each other tell our stories better.

Comments on design, technical details, aesthetics, even writing style are welcome. Criticism of lifestyle choices or other things unrelated to the practice of online journalkeeping are not. While the list will not be ruled with an iron fist, personal attacks and outright flames will not be tolerated. Warnings for improper behavior will be privately issued, and if no improvement is seen, may lead the worst offenders to be banned from the list.

  • Try to stay out of crit debt. The Journalize process favors new diarists who haven't received a crit, and is purely voluntary, but we realize this makes it susceptible to imbalance or abuse. That's why we recommend people interested in becoming active on the list commit themselves to writing at least two crits before joining. Of course, Journalize Review will eventually reveal people who are only collecting crits, and in time, they will likely receive no further crits as they drop in rank.

  • We need to know if you leave the list. Just as you need to declare yourself an active member, you need to tell us when you're unsubscribing (or becoming inactive to merely lurk). That way we can remove your name from Journalize Review and make room for other diarsts. Of course, we hope you're signing off inspired and satisfied, and certainly not in "crit debt." (No, you don't have to tell the whole list. Just send an e-mail to imr@lightfantastic.org.)
