"Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride," Disney's Lilo and Stitch (June 2002)

  [ Album Cover ]
"Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride," performed by Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu and the Kamehameha School Children's Chorus, is from the soundtrack to "Lilo & Stitch," a full-length animated motion picture from Disney that opened nationwide on June 21.

The "Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack" to the film was released June 11.

Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu is a former Honolulu hula teacher now living in Oakland, California, where he leads Na Mele Hula 'Ohana (founded in 1978 by Kumu Hula Bea Hew Len and her husband, Herbert). Another song he and the choir performed for the soundtrack is "He Mele No Lilo."

A brief video clip of the Kamehameha Schools Children's Choir in the studio recording the song can be found here (MPEG), excerpted from the February 5 episode of Imua TV, Kamehameha's television news magazine show.

Lyrics
Courtesy Kamehameha Schools:

Aloha e, aloha e!
(Aloha e, aloha e!)

`Ano`ai ke aloha e!
(`Ano`ai ke aloha e!)

There's no place I'd rather be,
Than on my surfboard out at sea,
Lingering in the ocean blue,
And if I had one wish come true,
I’d surf 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon...

`Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi,
Lawe mai i ko papa he`e nalu.

Flying by on a Hawaiian roller coaster ride!

`Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi,
Lawe mai i ko papa he`e nalu,
Pi`i na nalu, la lahalaha,
`O ka moana, hanupanupa,
Lalala i ka la hanahana,
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu`e one,
Helehele mai kakou e!

Hawaiian roller coaster ride!

There's no place I'd rather be,
Than on the seashore dry, wet free,
On golden sand is where I'd lay,
And if I only had my way,
I'd play 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon...

Lalala i ka la hanahana,
Me ke kai hoene i ka pu`e one.

It's time to try the Hawaiian roller coaster ride!

Hang loose, hang ten, howzit, shake a shaka,
No worry, no fear, ain't no biggy brahda,
Cuttin in, cuttin up, cuttin back, cuttin out,
Frontside, backside, goofy footed, wipe out,
Let's get jumpin, surfs up and pumpin,
Coastin with the motion of the ocean,
Whirlpools swirling, cascading, twirling —
Hawaiian roller coaster ride!

There's no place I'd rather be,
Than on my surfboard out at sea,
Lingering in the ocean blue,
And if I had one wish come true,
I’d surf 'til the sun sets beyond the horizon...

`Awikiwiki, mai lohilohi
Lawe mai i ko papa he`e nalu.

Rough Translation*
By Ryan Kawailani Ozawa:

Hello!
(Hello!)

Greetings with love!
(Greetings with love!)

Hurry up, don't delay,
Bring your surfboard.

Hurry up, don't delay,
Bring your surfboard,
Climb the waves, spread your arms,
The ocean is surging,
Bask in the hot sun,
With the soft water on the sand dune,
Come everyone!
